Piarist Church of St. Francis Xaver in Trencin. Who was the Queen Neachille on the altarpiece?
Note 1: It is a variant of Pozzo's painting of the same name, which is in Trento, Italy, in the church of St. Francis Xavier. After Pozzo's death, the painting in Trento was finished by his pupil and nephew Mignocchi, who is also the author of another painting in the Trencin church (the painting Immaculata Triumphans in the side chapel of the Immaculate Conception) (17). Thus, there is a personal connection between Trencin and Trento, and the authors of the paintings are representatives of "pozzism" (the term of art historian Serfőz, cited in 17). The Trencin painting of Neachil is signed by Christopher Tausch, a Viennese pupil of Pozzo. Pozzo's presence in Trencin, as reported by Branecky, has not yet been confirmed by other sources (17).
Note 2: Whether Francis himself performed the baptism was questioned by some authors (8). It is similar to the famous baptism of the Japanese prince Otomo Sorin, which is in several paintings (e.g., the painting in the Jesuit church in nearby Uherske Hradiste) (18).
Note 3: A convincing written record on this execution does not exist, however. It can be a myth. Undesirable persons of royal descent were removed usually by poison murder, an official execution would be uncommon.
Note 4: It can be also observed in the altarpiece in nearby city Uherske Hradiste, the “Baptism of the Oriental King Sv. František” by the painter Jiri Heinsch. In the painting, Francis baptizes the Japanese prince Otomo Sorin, while the indigenous people with headbands have the appearance of American Indians rather than Japanese (18). Jesuits had a different approach to the figures of the saints than to the indigenous people. The physical appearance of the saints was "canonized", and so Francis has the same appearance in all the paintings (the so-called real form, Verra Effigies). This form was created allegedly according to the postmortal mask of Francis (19). The form was certainly "improved" and idealized. In the case of Neachil, we speculate on "beginning" canonization of the form (all paintings show the same young charismatic woman, arousing sympathy with her). Perhaps the Jesuits intended to beatify Neachil in the future (?). The prerequisite for the beatification was a successful propaganda, so that the public would firstly come to like the character (20). Part of such a campaign, in principle not unlike the campaigns of the current advertising industry, was a suitable visual presentation. In the case of success, the proposal for the beatification could then be successfully "passed" through the papal commission. For the Jesuits, the agreement with the real physical appearance of any saint or candidate for beatification played a secondary role. In the first place, it was necessary to evoke a strong emotional impression by the image. The image was part of a complex "multimedia" effect, which was supposed to be almost hypnotic (teatrum sacrum). This has been achieved by the synergic effect of the paintings, sculptures, architecture, sophisticated lighting and the liturgy scenario, sometimes with the use of "stage" mechanics (apparato) (13). I would like to ad that the term "propaganda" should be understood as ethically neutral. From an ethical point of view, propaganda can be deceptive ('black' propaganda) or, conversely, based on truthful information ('white' propaganda), or it can be something between the two (21).
